Why I Love Red Hair

So, it's been a while since I've posted, and I have written several posts in my head, but just haven't had the time to write them out. But this one will be short and sweet (well...relatively). And it's something that I feel very passionately about.

Some people lately have been surprised/in awe of the fact that I love red hair. Love is really too weak a word for it, but in the limitations of my language, visual effects will have to suffice to emphasize my feelings. A friend postulated that many, if not most people, say they don't have a preference for the hair color of people they date, as long as it's not red, and I am the exact opposite (and that makes me weird). To all you ginger-haters out there, I present a list of why red hair makes my heart sing (on men and women, all red hair is beautiful).

    1. Ever heard of a precious metal called Copper? It looks like red hair:Copper   Red hair
    2. Freckles on women=adorable:
    3. Freckles on men=delicious:
    4. From my observation, red hair tends to be shinier than average other colors:
    5. Curly red hair=HAWT!! (on men and women):
    6. Red hair has many, many shades, that all look brilliant:
    7. Red hair gives you license to kick butt if needed:
    8. Red hair makes you invincible (this is a proven fact I learned when I dyed my hair red continuously for 4-5 years):
    9. Red hair=royal genetics:
    10. Red hair is often associated with being Irish and Scottish, two cultures known for being kick-awesome:
    11. Ron Weasley:
    12. Ginny Weasley:
    13. Fred Weasley:
    14. George Weasley:
    15. Charlie Weasley:   (thanks to this deviant artist because Charlie was not portrayed in the movies).
    16. Bill Weasley:
    17. Arthur Weasley:
    18. And most especially, Molly Weasley:
    19. Lots of celebrities wish they had red hair:
    20. Even black girls gotsta shout:
    21. Red heads are known for being the sassy ones:
    22. Everyone wants green eyes, and they look the best with red hair:
    23. And lastly, Rupert Grint (yes, he is different than Ron Weasley):

Final Analysis of the Twilight Saga

So over the past few months, my sister Jill and my dear friend Jill have both been...pressuring...me to watch the Twilight movies. Watch, because they knew reading was beyond the powers of their persuasion. And out of a great act of love, I did. Here's my synopsis:
  1. Twilight: Hilariously disgusting.
  2. New Moon: Horrific.
  3. Eclipse: Hilariously disturbing.
  4. Breaking Dawn #1: Unnerving, and yet...decent.
  5. Breaking Dawn #2:  Continuously decent, and then hilariously violent.
Now, I could probably write a huge essay detailing why I feel this way. But I will try to be precise. For more details on my views on the despicable morality of Twilight, see here. But for my more optimistic views now that I've seen the whole story, stay right where you're at.

1. Bella and Edward's relationship.

I still think that Edward is just a prettier version of Anakin Skywalker. Super obsessive and creepy. Yeah, I'll be honest. I found that kind of ardent attention attractive (in Anakin), until I dated a guy who gave me that kind of attention. Ladies: it is not exciting or flattering or endearing after about...two days. It is a burden; it causes fear and anxiety in your life. Some women are willing to continue putting up with it. It took Padme's life to do so. I almost did it, too, and thank goodness that path of my life was intervened.

BUT: Once they get married, their relationship changes. Actually, I should say, once they find out Bella's pregnant (don't get me started on the holes in the logic here, such as a 100-year-old vampire having semen) their relationship changes. According to Gary Chapman, author of The Five Love Languages, the "falling in love" sensation lasts about two years. After that, love requires commitment and choice and dedication and all those things that everyone warns you about. Bella and Edward's two years were long up by they time they get married. But the dedication they showed to each other in the face of this huge trial was surprising to me. And then after the "baby" was born, the continued dedication they showed to each other and their daughter was impressive. Yes, impressive. I was impressed. So that was pretty much the most redeeming aspect of the entire series. Bella and Edward were pretty good parents and the message about family unity was undeniably timely.

2. Bella and Jacob's relationship.

Let me put this out there: WHY on earth would you date/marry a creepy-face killer when you could marry an immensely attractive wolf man who completely accepts you for who you are, understands your feelings and your viewpoint, and keeps you warm at night? Done and done.

Clearly if I were on a team, it would be Team Jacob. Yeah, it's not as magnetic or electric or whatever as Bella and Edward's "Chemistry." Well, let me tell you something about chemistry. All reactions reach a point where are the molecules have spent their energy and there is nothing left to react. What lasts forever? True friendship. This is what healthy relationships are based on.

The whole imprint thing still sicks me out.

3. Overall plot arc.

I always thought the idea of a teenager falling in love with a vampire was intriguing. Ever since I read the first book, anyway. Great premise for a story. A government for vampires (thereby establishing a history and depth to their reality)? Brilliant. Arch-enemies in werewolves? Not too creative, but overcoming that for love...that has potential. All of these were poorly executed. But good ideas. Good enough ideas that they do in fact contribute to my resevoir of writing inspiration. The story contributes. Not the writing. And especially not the "no killing my main characters" stuff, and not because of a strong non-violence standpoint like Aang has (The Last Airbender). Am I happy that Fred Weasley died? Heck to the no!! It still hurts my heart to think about it. But am I glad Rowling did it? Yes. It increases my respect for her as a writer, and also in a battle of good vs evil, there has to be casualties, and just because someone loves you, doesn't mean you're safe. However, Twilight was not a story of good vs evil. It wasn't even a story of moral growth or strength. That's probably why the parenthood was my favorite part of the whole thing: because it revealed the most moral character in Bella and Edward (and the whole Cullen family, as well as Jacob). This is a story without archetypes or symbolism. It's sole purpose was to explore the aspects of love, and it doesn't even start on real love until after they get married.

4. Femininity:

I was for a long while appalled at Bella's perturbing setbacks in portraying independent female protagonists (by independent I mean thinking for themselves, making hard choices because it's what's best and not necessarily what they want, having grown-up emotions). But she almost entirely redeemed that with her motherhood. Because motherhood is the pinnacle of femininity.

So there you have it. Now I've seen the whole thing. I didn't hate every minute of it (although there were moments in every movie when I found myself asking "why isn't this over yet?" and I laughed out loud at inappropriate parts of each movie). I found some shiny (or glittering?) beacons of hope in it. But I don't feel the need to ever watch it again. Maybe if I was on lortab. ;)

A Word about Peeta

Last night, my car died for the second time in 2012. It's only March. A little upsetting?

In January I ended up paying over $1,400 to fix my car, Peeta. I was terrified that I would have to pay that much again to keep him. But honestly, I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I, like Katniss, was willing to give anything to take Peeta home alive with me

Am I in love with my car, legitimately, or am I in love with the idea that he and the fictional character he was named after stand for?

I really hope it's the second.

Peeta Mellark is one of those fictional characters that represents the ideal man (at least my ideal man!). He is kind, selfless, patient, and generous, but above all that, he knows who he is, what he believes, and is willing to die defending that. For example, one of my favorite parts of the film:

So I'm planning on writing a legitimate essay, maybe more like a research paper, about how amazing Peeta is (also one about Ron Weasley). I know that no one cares about this as much as I do, but as long as I'm analyzing something so intensely, I might as well make it academic.

But the good news is, my mechanic fixed Peeta in one day, and since the problem was a result of something that didn't get completely fixed in January, he didn't charge me anything. Holla for honest mechanics!!

(Disclaimer for anyone who doesn't know me very well who might read this: I'm not in love with my car, although I am pretty attached to it. I know it's an it, not a he, and that it doesn't "stand" for anything. I just like symbols and personification.)

July: Month of Action! 3rd Weekend

The third weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the one I'd been looking forward to for months. Because you all should know, HARRY POTTER CAME OUT!!!!

My supervisor at work really doesn't care for anything that isn't reality, but he's a pretty cool guy anyway, and he'd been teasing me all week about Harry Potter. He asked me to wear my costume to work on Friday and called me "Gryffindor" all day. I didn't have the heart to tell him I'm a Hufflepuff (how Hufflepuffish of me. :) ).

If any of you know my sister, you know that we had a kick awesome party before the midnight showing. For very complete details about what we did, read this. But I'll sum up with: we hunted for each horcrux, ending in a slaying of Nagini; we had a Honeydukes corner, lots of good Hog's Head food, and there was a prize drawing in which I won the grand prize: a Harry Potter lego set! But I traded it with a little boy who'd won a movie poster. I collect movie posters anyway, plus I'm pretty sure he'd get more use out of the Legos than I would (some of my sisters are still bitter).

Then we headed over to the theater, my sisters and I dressed up as the Holyhead Harpies in quidditch robes Camilla made. There were so many fantastic costumes!! I will share my favorites:

Let me say this about Harry Potter: real literature, and I'm talking literature, not books, inspires something deep within you, not just you, but in everyone who will allow it. This is not because it whacks you over the head, but because it harnesses the essence of humanity within its characters and situations. Harry Potter may be fantasy, and it may be modern, and it may be easy to read, but that does not make it mediocre. Trust me when I say there is enough intelligence left in humanity that mediocrity will still never sell as well as brilliance (although certain book series that shall not be named are cutting it way too close). Harry Potter is true literature that will stand the test of time to inspire, uplift, and challenge readers for decades to come. It is the stuff of dreams, even the stuff of myths. Thank you, J.K. Rowling. Thank you for sharing your genius.

The MOST Important Things for a Friday Night

So I've been slacking at doing things I need to get done with my life, for example, it took me six weeks to get my friends' wedding scrapbook done, when it should've taken two at the most (especially when I have another I need to do, and will have 1-3 more I need to do in two weeks). So I decided this weekend I was going to get a lot done and not let my friends distract me.

But tonight, I got a lot more done in a shorter amount of time than expected. So around 8:30, I started thinking that maybe I should do something with friends...only problem is...I don't know where they are! I hadn't heard from anyone for hours. So, of course, I started pitying myself and such.

So I was shopping on Barnes & Noble.com and trying to come up with Father's Day gift ideas, when suddenly I just kept thinking I really need to check and see if Harry Potter midnight tickets have gone on sale, since my sister Jill left me in charge of buying them for our large midnight going group.

And there they were, on sale!! Because of my promptness in buying tickets after they went on sale, I was able to buy 23 sitting together. And now 23 people will be able to thoroughly enjoy the final installment of Harry Potter at midnight!!

That's when I realized there are more important things than friends. Things like Harry Potter, and seeing it first. :)

I also got a lot done, like cleaning, laundry, working out, my lesson for Primary, etc. And now I'm going to spend the rest of the night working on my book. :)
